Delta brainwaves have the slowest frequencies, ranging between 0.1 and 4 hertz, and these are the brainwave states associated with deep sleep, trance states, and unconsciousness. Few people can remain awake during delta brainwaves states, although this state is recorded in awake infants between ages of three months and one year and also in babies just before birth. Delta waves are also linked with increased production of HGH, DHEA, and the neuro-transmitter serotonin.
Because the mind and body are a single system, changing our brainwaves and spending more time in harmonious, relaxed, and restorative mind-states also affects our physical health. Physical health then reinforces our mental-state, and a feedback loop of either positive or negative processes becomes established. Research studies have shown beneficial effects of using brainwave entrainment for treating migraine headaches, premenstrual syndrome, and for managing physical pain.
When stress overwhelms your nervous system, your body is flooded with chemicals that prepare you for “fight or flight.” This stress response can be lifesaving in emergency situations where you need to act quickly. But when it’s constantly activated by the stresses of everyday life, it can wear your body down and take a toll on your emotional and physical health.
A common element in recordings incorporating alpha and theta frequencies is a steady but barely perceptible rhythm of the frequencies themselves. This subtle and calming pulse mixes with sounds of gentle breezes, distant bird songs, and the slow progression of deep synth notes. Underneath this, below the audible sounds at sub 16 hertz levels, other frequencies intermingle, deepening the merging of conscious and unconscious mind.

I personally have been experimenting with binaural beats – both in and out of the float tank – for the past year or so and they have quickly and easily become one of my favourite go-to “hacks” for helping me achieve a desired state of being. From listening to a specific track right before going to sleep which helps put my mind and body in a state of relaxation and recovery to, on the flip-side, listening to a track that helps prime my brain-state for creativity and focus right before I sit down to do some work – like writing this blog! They are also an enjoyable and effective asset to try out and experiment with while in the float tank. For the reasons mentioned above, as well as the sound frequencies can resonate a subtle but noticeable vibration in the tank, water and your body making for quite the unique floating experience!
In simplest form, they are an audio technology which are used for (safe) brainwave entrainment. Our subconscious mind operates, throughout the day and night, in various brainwave state frequencies, measured in cycles per second (Hz) These frequencies range from the slowest (Delta) frequencies experienced in deep, dreamless sleep and in deep meditation where your conscious-awareness is fully detached, to the fastest (Gamma) frequencies associated to stimulating flow states, high-level thinking and information processing. The exact physiological mechanisms to explain how exercise improves stress have not been delineated. Human and animal research indicates that being physically active improves the way the body handles stress because of changes in the hormone responses, and that exercise affects neurotransmitters in the brain such as dopamine and serotonin that affect mood and behaviors (9,11). In addition to the possible physiological mechanisms, there also is the possibility that exercise serves as a time-out or break from one’s stressors. A study that tested the time-out hypothesis used a protocol that had participants exercise but did not allow a break from stress during the exercise session (5). Participants were college-aged women who reported that studying was their biggest stressor. Self-report of stress and anxiety symptoms was assessed with a standard questionnaire before and after four conditions over 4 days. The conditions were quiet rest, study, exercise, and studying while exercising. These conditions were counterbalanced across participants, and each condition was 40 minutes in duration. The “exercise only” condition had the greatest calming effect (5). When participants were not given a break from their stressor in the “studying while exercising” condition, exercise did not have the same calming effect.

Another consideration of stress is whether it is acute or chronic. “Acute stress” is what an individual experiences at the time the stressor is encountered (4). The stress response is activated, and the body returns to homeostasis once the challenge of the stressor is removed or the person successfully manages the situation. For example, an individual on the way to an important meeting gets into a traffic jam and realizes she is going to be late; the stress response starts. When she calls her boss and learns that she can conference into the meeting while on the road, the stress response subsides with the resolution of the situation. When an individual experiences acute stress on a consistent basis, such as with overcommitting at work or constant worrying, it is referred to as “acute episodic stress” (4). Individuals who experience acute episodic stress often show signs and symptoms of stress (Table 1) that can negatively impact physical and psychological health. These individuals can learn how to change behaviors and manage their stress to prevent these consequences.

I have been using the Equisync CDs at least 24 minutes 5 days a week. It instantly relaxes me, helps get rid of headaches and even hiccups! In their earlier experiments, the scientists had detected connections between neurons from organoids and neurons from the mouse brain, but they could not tell  whether or not the neurons could actually communicate with one and  other. Optogenetics is an extremely clever technique that uses light to  control neurons. By using this technique, the researchers were able to  specifically stimulate the neurons in the organoids by turning on and  off a light. When the light was on, the neurons of the organoids became  electrically active. When they used electrodes to measure the activity  of neurons outside the organoid in another part of the mouse brain, they  were able to detect electrically activated neurons there too, showing  that organoid neurons could signal to host neurons.

The objective of  this  paper  is  to  analyze  the  effects  of  binaural  audio  as  a relaxation method for people that suffer anxiety and stress.  The study took place at ITESM, Santa Fe Campus, where twenty participants around 21  years old  took part  of the study. They  were divided  into  two  groups,  Experimental  and  Control.  The first  one listened to the Theta binaural stimuli and the second one listened to a stimulus with nature sounds (birds and wind).  The  results  show  that  the  experimental  group  got  to  conscious relaxation.  The  control  group  had  an  unconscious  relaxation (sleep),  but  when  the  stimuli  stopped  they  recovered  their  stress level, for some participants it increased.  1. BACKGROUND At  the  end  of  the  19th  century,  Pierre  Janet,  a  French psychologist,  discovered  that  his  patients  relaxed  when  they were exposed to rhythmic light patterns. Hans Berger showed in 1924  that  brainwaves  could  be  read  and  studied  through  an encephalogram  [2].  The  first  studies  were  done  using  visual stimuli, while later studies were done using sounds [3].  Brainwaves  are  caused  by  changes  in  the  electric  tension between  two  points  in  the  brain  cortex.  The electroencephalogram  has  been  used  to  analyze neurophysiological  relations  that  exist  between  mental  states and  brainwave  frequencies.  When  somebody’s  mental  state changes  from  alert  to  somnolence,  low  amplitude  and  high frequency  brain  waves  turn  into  high  amplitude  and  low frequency [4]. 2. BINAURAL AUDIO Giuseppe  Tartini  discovered  combination  tones.  These  occur when  two  tones  are  heard  at  the  same  time  and  the  listener perceives  a  third  tone.  The  frequency  of  the  third  tone  is calculated  by  the  difference  between  the  first  two  tones,  as shown in equation 1.                               (∆   ) [8]                      (1)  The superior olivary  complex  integrates  the  phase differences, which  makes  possible  the  perception  of  the  third  tone.  For example, if the left ear  hears a  400Hz tone and  the  right ear  a 410Hz  tone,  the  listener  will  perceive  a  10Hz  tone  [9]. This third tone is also known as binaural frequency.    The  binaural  frequency  is  directed  from  the  superior  olivary complex to the reticular formation and the brain cortex, where the  electroencephalogram  can  read  its  effect.  The  Frequency Following  Response  (FFR)  phenomenon  happens  when  the frequency  read  by  the  encephalogram  is  equal  to  the combination tone frequency.  When this happens, the frequency resonates  in  the  brain  stimulating  the  reticular  formation inducing  different psychological  states.  Brainwave bands  and psychological consequences are shown in Table 1 [16]. Theta  binaural  sound  waves  are also  helpful with relaxation and anxiety reduction [11]. According  to  the results  presented  by  the company  Regus, in Mexico,  75%  of  employed  people  suffer  from  stress  and anxiety. These cause social,  health,  and  economic problems  at the same  time that productivity decreases [5]. According to  the Mexican  National  Labor  Organization,  stress  means  that  the GDP decreases from 0.5 to 3.5%.  Stress  leads  to  anxiety,  irritability,  fear,  depression,  suicidal thoughts, and  lack of concentration. Some other symptoms  are headaches,  nausea,  dizziness,  muscular  tension, insomnia,  and tachycardia  [6].  There  are  different  techniques  to  induce relaxation  like  meditation.  New  relaxation  techniques  with binaural audio have been developed through Neurosciences. 3. OBJECTIVES •  Evaluate  and  analyze  binaural  audio  therapy  effects (Theta frequencies) on people that suffer anxiety and stress (Students at ITESM), in order to induce relaxation and reduce anxiety. •  Determine if  the  binaural  therapy  induced  relaxation  in  the experimental group and  compare  the results  to those  from the control group.  • Through the STAI test and the electroencephalogram results, determine which stimulus is more efficient. 4. HYPOTHESIS Hi:  Frequency  Following  Response  phenomenon  will  take place, as Delta and Theta bands will share frequencies with the combination tones. Hi. This article contains a lot of information about brainwave entertainment. Thanks. I have a question. I downloaded an Android app that plays isochronic tones. I like to use an Isochronic tone at 2.5Hz that is in Delta range and is supposed to help me get a deep and dreamless sleep. I use it without headphones and just keep the smartphone next to my pillow. But I do not know if I should keep the tone playing all the time while I sleep or put it on timer to shut off after some specified time. A custom timer is possible with the app. Can you please guide me.

A popular opinion in the brainwave entrainment community is that listening to isochronic tones without music produces a much stronger effect.  However, in the study by Doherty, Cormac. “A comparison of alpha brainwave entrainment, with and without musical accompaniment” (2014),  it was concluded that brainwave entrainment was equally effective for isochronic tones, both with and without music.

Discovered by Austrian Psychiatrist Hans Berger in 1908, Alpha brainwaves cycle 8 to 13 times per second, a good bit slower than beta brainwaves. While considered a part of a group of brainwaves, the Alpha brainwave has one distinct trait that makes it stand out from its siblings – it appears and disappears while going through our brain. Sometimes alpha waves are present, sometimes they are not. The disappearance of the Alpha brainwave usually occurs when someone is asleep or experiences heightened emotions such as fear or anger.
